When the puritans spoke of ‘the church in London’ they meant, in effect, a group of unbeneficed stipendiary curates and preachers, some of them lecturers in the parish churches or in the inns of court, others lacking even that measure of settled responsibility. There were many ways in which a preacher could pick up a living in Elizabethan London, almost as many as when the careless colleague of Chaucer's poor parson ‘ran to London, un-to seynt Poules, to seken him a chaunterie for soules.’ The standing of these hirelings might seem at first glance to be precarious, lacking as they did the proprietary security which enabled a Robert Crowley to boast that he was master of his own parish.
