This chapter discusses several issues including Bishops and family politics, Bishops and Chieftans, and reform and reaction. Nothing can be known with certainty about the Bishop selection procedures until 1150. Down to that time, the choice of electus has been mostly in the hands of the preceding Bishop, and, after 1106, in the hands of the Bishop of the other see. The choice of successor had been influenced by familial and/or discipular relationships. Meanwhile, after the year 1153, the Norwegian churches embarked upon a serious programme of reform which gained a number of privileges from King Magnús Erlingson, but ran into serious confrontation with King Sverrir.
