This chapter examines the academic conservatism of Oxford University in England. When Science Greats was proposed in 1923 as a scientific analogue to the successful Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE), it was rejected. The arts dominance in the university was associated with the cherished notion that Oxford's raison d'etre remained liberal education and not professional training. Thus, when engineering was introduced in 1908 it was called engineering science to stress its non-vocationality.
