This chapter sets out to establish the nature of witchcraft theory in England in the wake of the Restoration. It suggests that during this period, witchcraft theory articulated a common anxiety to maintain the sacral nature of the state and the acceptance of a model in which the Church and secular society were somehow intertwined. It analyses the witchcraft beliefs of several noted personalities during the Restoration including Royalist Churchman Meric Casaubon, experimentalist clergyman Joseph Glanvill, and peripatetic experimenter Richard Baxter.
