This introductory chapter explains what the book is all about. The first British banks to have branches outside the United Kingdom materialized in the 1830s and remained as the leading institutions in banking industry until at least the 1960s. This book will explain the history of British multinational banking from its origins in the 1830s until 1990, their sources of competitive advantage, their strategies of control, their response to changing environmental circumstances, and their performance over time. These subjects are explained using concepts developed in studies on the rise of managerial capitalism, the history of multinational enterprise, and the determinants of national competitive advantage.
