This chapter provides a discussion on the champions and critics of the British Empire. During the period 1900–64, the constituent elements of ‘imperialism’ altered greatly, forcing compensating shifts in what composed ‘anti-imperialism’. Like all movements of protest, ‘anti-imperialism’ was forced to be as multifaceted and mutable as its opponent. The chapter specifically describes the British imperialism during 1900–18, 1918–40 and 1940–64. In addition, it explains metropolitan anti-imperialism in retrospect.

Keywords:   British Empire, British imperialism, Britain, anti-imperialism, champions, critics, metropolitan anti-imperialism
