This chapter compares the Scottish Enlightenment and the German Aufklärung, which were among the most lively and distinct national variants of the European Enlightenment. It examines the passage of political ideas between two 18th century cultures in the Scottish and German versions of the Enlightenment. It suggests that while Scottish epistemology, aesthetics, and political economy all left marks on German writings of the late Enlightenment and early romanticism, its political thought failed to cross the cultural and linguistic barriers with similar ease.
