This chapter focuses on the origins of Fianna Fáil. It discusses political forces before 1923, Sinn Fein, its emergence of a new identity after the civil war, the economic and political constraints facing the new government, and the search for a political alternative influencing the birth of Fianna Fáil. The programme that was to emerge with the birth of Fianna Fáil would promise salvation for the petty bourgeoisie whilst offering sufficient concrete gains to enlist the support of large sections of the rural and urban poor. This explains why it gained such rapid popularity not only with Sinn Fein faithful, but also with many republicans who had dropped out of active politics, disillusioned in the aftermath of the civil war.
