This chapter examines the intellectual interest of the contents of Salisbury Cathedral's collection of books. The findings suggest that the number of biblical commentaries in the Salisbury collection and the character of some of them indicate that the canons' interests in Biblical texts were of a scholarly as well as a spiritual nature. The analyses also reveal that the scholarly interests of the Salisbury canons were derived from the teachings of masters in the schools of northern France in the late 11th and early 12th centuries.
