This chapter describes the start of the second Polish war, where Napoleon ordered his multinational army to cross the Niemen River into Russian territory. Czartoryski's hope of Napoleon rendering him justice by recognizing his patriotism is mentioned, and in his letter he wrote about the importance of honour, personal integrity, and duty as moral foundations of pure patriotism. It is worth noting that the next generation of Polish patriots was not to be impressed by such scruples. Czartoryski's decision was made for him in the last resort by the force of events. The ready act of accession to the Confederacy was not sent by Warsaw — to Czartoryski's immense relief.
