This chapter describes how disappointment with France and Emperor Alexander's friendly attitude toward the Polish nobility of his domains, which included over half of pre-partition Poland, not only encouraged a degree of coexistence with new conquerors, but persuaded many émigrés to return home and seek amnesty. Although Alexander quickly restored diplomatic relations with Britain and withdrew from the League of Armed Neutrality, some of the young friends of the Unofficial Committee still retained misgivings about his apparent partiality for France. The Prince's attitude towards France in 1803 seemed not unreasonable, he accepted the First Consul as an established and recognized factor in European affairs and voiced moderation on the subject of France's system of government. This chapter also describes ‘The System’ that revealed a predilection for theoretical concepts that were to provide Czartoryski's policies with an undeniable ideological framework. Czartoryski's ultimate goal was nothing less than eternal peace and the perfection of the human race.
