‘Increasing Strains and Stresses within the IRA’, 1932–1934
This chapter examines the internal conflict within the Irish Republican Army (IRA) during the period from 1932 to 1934. The IRA's problems started with the victory of the Eamon de valera and the Fianna Fáil party in the general election of February 1932. The party's winning programme of government relied for much of its coherence on the undoing of the treaty against which republicans had fought in 1922–23. The program successfully targeted and gained the support of the workers, farmers, agricultural labourers, and the unemployed.
