This chapter describes Grey's domestic life at Howick and his efforts to establish his sons in their careers. Grey's resignation in the spring of 1807 and his succession to the peerage in November ended the first phase of his career. During the next twenty-three years, he frequently expressed reluctance to return to public life or to shoulder political responsibility. Grey then tried to live his political life again through his eldest son. His disillusionment and frustration with his own career fed his ambition to see his son, Henry, achieve what he felt he himself had been unable to do. Charles's progress in the army was equally close to his father's heart, and no effort was spared to put him in the way of promotion.
