- Science and Structure in Proust's
- Oxford University Press
The ‘retroduction’ of this chapter aims to reconnect the images of ‘Proust's science’ with the rhetoric of sententiousness. In effect, it reconnects metaphor and maxim. The dynamic and literal readings of the maxims of A la recherche can be seen to parallel the ambiguities of the legislative and performative science of the text's metaphors. The generalities at the heart of the text constitute ‘scientific’ discoveries about human nature, the Proustian ‘laws’.
