Montaigne's Career

George Hoffmann

Oxford University Press

This chapter assesses the degree to which Montaigne involved himself in the actual printing of his book and the impact this experience had upon his later revisions to the 1588 edition. It illustrates Montaigne's remarkable ability to exploit the accidents of language in print, and how he transformed to his advantage ambiguities between the professional and personal halves of his literary career — ambiguities upon which many a lesser writer might have stumbled.
