Montaigne's Career

George Hoffmann

Oxford University Press

This introductory chapter sets out the purpose of the book, which focuses on Montaigne's so-called inactive years. It argues that he may have expended much more time and effort managing his family's property than has been thought; that publishing absorbed further energies in demanding he perform professional tasks such as financing, proofreading, and revising for re-editions; and finally that rather than an alternative to a political career, writing served Montaigne as complement to and perhaps even as integral part of his public success. An overview of the subsequent chapters is presented.
