In both ‘Don du poème’ and ‘Sainte’ it is possible to see a Mallarmé who has moved beyond ‘autant d'intuitives révélations de mon tempérament’ and acceded to the manner of writing outlined to Villiers in which ‘le sujet de mon oeuvre est la Beauté, et le sujet apparent n'est qu'un prétexte pour aller vers Elle’. In the short term the epitome of this new manner of writing was to be ‘Herodiade’, but before considering this poem it is instructive to consider some of Mallarmé's prose poems from this period and to examine the emergence within them of his new ‘principles’. Such an examination is problematic since he revised them for later publication and in some cases the earliest extant versions of texts known to have been first drafted in 1864 date from at least three years later. Nevertheless, they provide substantial evidence that he was already consciously aiming at reflexivity in these texts as in the verse poems of the same period.
