The explicitness of its self-reference makes ‘Don du poème’ different from Mallarmé's previous ‘mirror-poems’, in which, as he tells Cazalis, he had ‘intuitivement’ revealed his reflexive poetic temperament. With ‘Don du poème’ (soon to be followed by ‘Sainte’ and the ‘Ouverture’ to ‘Herodiade’) such conscious reflexivity constitutes the new way to beauty, Mallarmé's chosen path beyond Le Parnasse contemporain to the timeless summit of Mount Parnassus.
