This chapter discusses Goethe's actions and writings between 1779 and 1789. These include the play, Iphigenie auf Tauris, where he examined a new way of reconciling the idea that man is part of nature with the idea that man is essentially good. Das römisehe Carneval, written in January 1789, is the only work with a primarily anthropological interest which Goethe published separately during his lifetime.
