This chapter discusses the emerging belief that the study of ‘literature as literature’ needs to be replaced or incorporated into a form of cultural studies. By the end of the chapter, it is noted that there were hardly any drastic alterations after the nineteenth century, and that the future of English faces hardly any, if any, overt change.
