The concluding chapter sums up the major changes and continuities in the cultural politics of Oriya nationalism, emphasizing the disruptive and fragmenting impact of electoral democracy and divisive debates on development on language-based identity movements. It sums up why Orissa provides an ideal case study for a dynamic understanding of the changing relationship between identity politics and local power during the periods of late colonialism and postcolonial democracy.
