This book focuses on the institutions of the state or institutions closely associated with the working of the state in India, drawing on the context of current discussions on the failure of the state and on possible alternatives to it in the form of various kinds of associations and movements. It argues that the constitutional state and civil society are complementary rather than contradictory to each other. The book looks at legislatures, courts of justice, and political parties, as well as the role of trust between government and opposition in the success of such democratic institutions. Furthermore, it analyses the balance between rights and trust in an institution and how democracy rests on a tension between two distinct principles, the rule of numbers and the rule of law.

Keywords:   state, democracy, civil society, trust, opposition, rule of law, rule of numbers, political parties, courts of justice, legislatures
