This chapter offers a detailed treatment of coalition politics in India and how it has conducted to the deepening of democracy by contributing to power-sharing by a wider range of parties and ethnic interests, including smaller parties and a range of minority groups. It surveys the major political parties and the electoral record, the evolution of coalition politics in India, and gives a detailed account of how the evolution of the party system, due to the operation of India’s electoral system in a federal context, has led to a series of minority and/or coalition governments which have had to be increasingly accommodative of a range of lesser political, ethnic and regional interests, thus conducing to the deepening of democracy.
