This chapter focuses on Richard Blechynden’s bibis, Indian and European, and the role of servants in these liaisons. It shows the complex nature of these relationships and their effect on Blechynden’s life in general. His relationship with Jeebun, Nancy, Bibi or Madam, whose loss affected Blechynden the most, Mary Anne, who was dismissed for sexual disloyalty, and an Armenian girl Krum Simone are discussed to throw light on gender, race, and class issues in colonial Calcutta.
