This chapter provides a brief account of the life of Richard Blechynden and an overview of the seventy-three volumes of his Calcutta diaries. The chapter ends with a basic outline of the position of women and gender relations in colonial Calcutta. The diaries served two basic purposes for Blechynden—as a literary exercise and an emotional and moral force. It discusses the concept of marriage and the position of bibis and the status of children arising out of such liaisons.
