This chapter describes the Mahajan Court of 1954. M.C. Mahajan was sixty-five when he became CJI on 4 January 1954. Mahajan’s tenure spanned almost all of that year, ending with his retirement on 22 December. Other members of his court include Bhuvaneshwar Prasad Sinha and Syed Jafer Imam. According to Sinha, Mahajan quickly decided to recommend that he, then the chief justice at Nagpur, be appointed to fill the Hasan vacancy, and that Imam, the chief justice at Patna and the most senior Muslim judge in the country, replace Mahajan when he retired. Sinha, then fifty-five, was sworn in on 3 December, and Imam, fifty-four, took his oath a few weeks later, on 10 January 1955. Mahajan, although his tenure as CJI was very brief, left a significant legacy, one that may have affected the history of the SCI.
