Maharajah of the Punjab

Maharajah of the Punjab

(p.188) 11. Maharajah of the Punjab
A History of the Sikhs

Khushwant Singh

Oxford University Press

This chapter discusses about the maharajah of the Punjab, Ranjit Singh. The first section gives an account of how Singh was established as the leader of the Punjab, including the pleas of the citizens of Lahore for Singh to come and take the city from the Sardars. It then discusses the alliance Singh forged with the Afghans, which dismayed his enemies and even the British. Although Singh would eventually become the maharajah of the Punjab, he was initially hesitant to accept the post. Once he did, he still refused to wear the emblem of royalty or sit on a throne. Singh stressed that all he wanted was to provide a Punjabi state where Sikhs, Muslims, and Hindus were all equal. The chapter examines several of his conquests and campaigns, including the capture of Amritsar. His modernization of the Punjab army is also discussed.
