This chapter introduces the Ali brothers—Mohamed and Shaukat—who succeeded Abul Kalam Azad in taking over the Khilafat agitation. It starts with a description of their early education. It then looks at Mohamed Ali, who became a journalist, as well as his struggles in the world of journalism. It then focuses on Shaukat Ali, Mohamed’s elder brother, who simply followed his advice with regard to politics. Although Shaukat largely ignored his studies, he became a noted debater and cricketer. The chapter then discusses the events that surrounded the brothers’ release following their criticism of the government. It shows that their case was supported by several prominent political leaders of the time, including Annie Besant and M.A. Jinnah. However, it was Mahatma Gandhi who fiercely defended the brothers.
