This chapter describes events in Poona during 1895–6, which seemed catastrophic not only due to the causes for which Gokhale stood, but for his own political future. He along with his friends had been outwitted and outmanoeuvred. He had lost control of the Sarvajanik Sabha, and its quarterly journal. When the first issue of the journal under the new management announced that Gokhale had resigned and proposed that he would devote all his time to his duties as a teacher, his political opponents were serving a notice on him that he would henceforth be on the shelf. Things looked bleak for Gokhale in 1896. Luckily for him, events were conspiring to bring him back into the limelight not only of local, but of national politics as well.
