This chapter focuses on the events that occurred after the death of Gokhale. Within nine months of Gokhale’s death, the Moderates suffered another shattering blow. Pherozeshah Mehta died on 5 November 1915. Most of the Congress veterans were dead or dying. Nationalist politics took a radical turn which helped foster the myth that the Moderates were political ‘mendicants’, woolly-headed, and weak-kneed politicians who only petitioned and prayed to the British for petty concessions, instead of demanding swaraj (self-governance). These myths were the more readily accepted because later generations found it difficult to visualize the heavy odds against which the founders of the Indian National Congress had to contend.
