This chapter describes the friendship that developed between Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Gopal Ganesh Agarkar, despite the differences in their backgrounds and temperaments. Both shared a spirit of adventure as they stood on the threshold of life. Unlike most young men of their age, they were preoccupied not with their own future, but with the future of their country. Tilak and Agarkar persuaded two other young men, Bhagwat and Karandikar, to join them in opening a private school in Poona. The opening of the New English School on 1 January 1880 and its subsequent success encouraged its founders to establish the Deccan Education Society to administer the School and to set-up more schools and colleges on similar lines.
