Dedicated brain-behavior networks continuously compute the relationships between our bodies and the world around us: in this chapter, the author describes the distinction between spatial cognitive and visual cognitive systems, and stress the importance of a cognitive information processing model in analyzing basic human behavioral data, data from animal models, and data from studies of the spatial neglect syndrome after stroke. Analyzing Where, perceptual-attentional, Where, representational, and Aiming, motor-intentional information processing will increase the validity of our theoretical constructs and group studies. Separating (stratifying) subgroups of patients with problems at different information processing stages is also critical to detecting group treatment effects in moderate-sized samples, and allows us to identify links to new animal research on a motor role of midbrain spatial systems.
