This chapter outlines the areas of current linguistic analysis that can help resolve defamation cases, such as determining the accuracy of defamation evidence (largely through phonetic skills), grammatical referencing as a way of unraveling ambiguities, speech act analysis to sort out such things as opinions vs. statements of fact, conveyed meanings brought about by connotation and pragmatics, malicious language (including the contributions of sarcasm, pejorative terms, exaggeration, rhetorical questions, and innuendo), and discourse structure and framing.
