This chapter presents a range of counterexamples to the searchlight view. In each example, the agent is unaware of some feature of an act that renders it wrong or foolish, yet still seems responsible for acting wrongly or foolishly. The chapter also contains arguments against the familiar idea that the reason culpably ignorant agents are responsible is that their current unwitting wrong or foolish acts can be traced to earlier choices to risk performing such acts or earlier failures of character development.

Keywords:   responsibility, culpable ignorance, tracing, unwitting wrongdoer, character, character development, benighting act
