One useful way of categorizing a brain-computer interface (BCI) is by the location of its sensor. The type and site of the sensor are directly tied to the kinds of signals that can be obtained and enable or limit the fidelity or quality of the signal. Intraparenchymal BCIs (iBCIs) are those that acquire brain signals from electrodes implanted within brain tissue (i.e., parenchyma), usually cerebral cortex. These are also called penetrating or intracortical BCIs. This chapter describes iBCIs developed to date and addresses the issues involved in their further development, issues concerning biocompatibility, design, reliability, and signal properties.
