Thomas Coke died at sea in 1814 while on his way to Sri Lanka with a group of British missionaries. Asbury collapsed with a high fever near Philadelphia in April 1814. He stopped keeping his journal, which he had kept up since his first days in America, and was not able to resume traveling until July. He continued to travel in 1815 determined to do three things: preach, collect money for the poor, and visit old friends. He died on March 31, 1816, in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, probably from congestive heart failure. He was on his way to the 1816 General Conference in Baltimore.
