Learning from the case of VOTF, this chapter summarizes the impact of the institutional environment on a movement acting from within an institution. It describes IISMs as bounded movements, restricted in form, repertoire, and identity by the institutional environment within which they operate. Five stages of IISMs encountering institutional authorities are also introduced. The chapter additionally draws attention to the multidimensional roles that religion, and culture more broadly, plays in social movements.
