This chapter traces twelve personal travel experiences in multicultural Europe, the US, Africa and Asia, which challenge widespread preconceptions about making and learning music. In doing so, it constitutes an introduction to the central themes of the book, illustrated by diverse practices of how music is learned and transmitted across the globe. It addresses preconceptions about music making and learning, the effects of globalisation on local cultures, and the complex realities of cultural diversity in most contemporary societies.
