This chapter provides several disparate definitions of the word discipline and presents a brief historical overview of several important forces that have shaped and continue to shape discipline in U.S. public schools, including the profound impact of Puritanism over several centuries, major Supreme Court cases and federal and state legislation since the 1960s, as well as Department of Education mandates and No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation. This chapter then moves to a discussion of a uniquely Western cultural phenomenon- the infantilization of our youth- and its impact on how we think about our youth and, in turn, how we discipline them. It concludes by arguing that the current discipline paradigm in U.S. public schools is ineffective and harmful and that a new way of thinking about school discipline and the policies and practices that result from this new way of thinking are needed.
