Learned Hand And Frances Fincke

Learned Hand And Frances Fincke

(p.61) 2. Learned Hand And Frances Fincke
Learned Hand

Gerald Gunther

Oxford University Press

This chapter focuses on Learned Hand's relationship with future wife Frances Fincke. Learned met Frances in July 1901, while both were vacationing in Murray Bay, a summer resort for the well-to-do on the St. Lawrence River in Quebec. Learned, then nearing thirty, thought himself destined for permanent bachelorhood, for he had never developed a serious interest in any young woman. Meeting Frances, a charming, beautiful twenty-five-year-old Bryn Mawr graduate from Utica, New York, dramatically changed that. Almost overnight, Learned, though typically indecisive on most questions, resolved that he wanted to marry Frances. A year after they met, they became engaged; six months later, in December 1902, they married.
