Environmentalism as a body of thought is more than 2,000 years old. It had a resurgence in the nineteenth century and was studied by American geographers in the 1800s and into the first half of the twentieth century. A central debate concerned the extent to which the environment essentially determines human behavior. Some geographers felt that extreme claims were made in this regard, and voiced their doubts beginning in the early 1920s. Leading geographer-exponents of environmentalism included Ellen C. Semple and Ellsworth Huntington, who wrote abundantly on the subject ca. 1900–1930.
