The study of commercial and economic geography emerged in Western Europe in the second half of the nineteenth century along with a literature and a place in the university. Economic geography developed in the United States with pioneer workers Emory Johnson, J. Russell Smith, Lindley M. Keasbey, and J. Paul Goode. These individuals helped create a literature and a variety of courses serving as models, some of which had been brought back from Germany. The selection of Panama for the canal, two world wars, development of a transportation system, study of the Canadian Polar margin, founding of the periodical Economic Geography, an enlarging literature, and theory are all part of the intellectual history of the development of American economic geography.
