This introductory chapter begins with a discussion of the voyage of chaplain Patrick Copland and English soldier Sir Thomas Dale from England to Asia, and how this transformed the latter' life. It then discusses how England transformed itself from a kingdom on the European fringes into one that was able to take advantage of new opportunities around the world. An overview of the subsequent chapters is presented.
