This chapter introduces the Faith at Work movement and defines some key terms. It cites the church's failure to address the growing need felt by businesspeople to integrate their faith and their work. This has led to the emergence of the FAW movement largely outside the church and its usual programs. The movement is decentralized, with loosely networked clusters of lay-initiated and lay-led activities that focus on integrating spirituality and work. The result has been the spawning of a various voluntary associations throughout America (and increasingly beyond), comprising many different individuals and types and sizes of groups, as well as a range of ways in which these people express themselves.
