This chapter examines the work of John Kander. It starts with an extended commentary of his career, and also gives details on productions, with data and song information. Kander attended Oberlin College in Ohio, where he wrote songs with childhood friend James Goldman. Coming to New York for a master’s degree from Columbia, Kander began to take work as an accompanist. He moved into the orchestra pit as a replacement on West Side Story (Bernstein: September 26, 1957). This led to the dance arrangement assignment on two Merrick musicals, Gypsy (Styne: May 21, 1959) and Irma la Douce (September 29, 1960)—both of which had especially fine dance arrangements.

Keywords:   John Kander, composers, James Goldman, musical theater, West Side Story, dance arrangement, Gypsy
