A distinction is made between virginity, which was mostly associated with women, and chastity, which represented a choice of lifestyle after sexual activity. These kinds of choices were associated with sexual purity, preparation for an intimate relationship with God, imitation of angels, and connection to superior moral and spiritual conditions. Resistance to church authority was evident by chaste marriages for devoted couples and lay sanctity movements, such as the Beguines.
