This chapter reviews studies concerning the impact of incarceration. The analysis shows that different aspects of incarceration make life harder for those who live in places that experience high rates of incarceration. The findings also reveal that elevated incarceration rates, focused on poor communities that already struggle, exacerbates the problems those communities face and that communities that provide large numbers of prisoners to the state and federal prison system struggle in a variety of ways, including a reduction of human and social capital.
