In the music to the choruses no attempt has been made to reproduce the Elizabethan style of music, but it is hoped that the music is appropriately simple. The music for the “Masquers' Entry,” the “Pavan,” and “Galliard” are taken from sixteenth-century dances, arranged for orchestra by Mr G. von Holst. The entrances of the Thebans and Boeotians are two English folk tunes—“Bristol Town” and “The Jolly Thresherman.” The morris dancers will be accompanied by their own music. The music for the Revels consists of four English folk tunes, “Sellenger's Round,” “The Lost Lady,” “Maria Marten,” and “All on Spurn Point,” arranged for orchestra by Mr G. von Holst. Some of these traditional melodies are from the composer's own manuscript collection; others are from the collection of Miss L. E. Broadwood. In the music of the choruses also, certain characteristic phrases from English folk music have been inserted.
