This chapter examines the application of scientific management in the medical sector in the U.S. The decline of the old fee-for-service system of health insurance has set the scene for the rise of managed care in the late 1980s and early 1990s. This made medicine the latest service industry to find itself the target of industrial reengineering. This chapter discusses the weaknesses of the old system and its failure to control health care costs.
