This chapter discusses how the everyday actions of physicians can affect their patients' trust. It focuses on a few basics to build trust: communication, professionalism, adherence to the paradigm of patient care, and an understanding of the healthcare environment. It points out that the current high cost of medical care is largely responsible for eroding patient trust, and suggests ways for physicians to help patients understand and reduce these costs. The chapter provides suggestions to incorporate a more psychosocial approach to the clinical interview that could help increase trust and satisfaction in the patient-physician relationship. It concludes by providing a checklist of actions physicians can take to improve the patient-physician relationship.
